i’m a new yorker and i’m not mad at what ray nagin said. he’s right but he didn’t finish the sentence:
‘That’s alright. You guys in New York can’t get a hole in the ground fixed due to poor policy and inefficient management and it’s five years later. So let’s be fair maybe New Orleans can say the same thing in five years.’

Someone said, and I agree, and who was it?
If the press wanted to help New Orleans, they would get a C Ray translator, or at least understand that we are city of one million, and our mayor is not the only voice, and is the mayor of a smaller city in the United States, not a governor, not a senator, and simply does not have the savvy of a national politician.
He spends most of his time in New Orleans, where his off the cuff, shoot from the hip style works well to disarm people, and he works closer to people than a state or federal executive, so you can’t expect the say nothing perfection.
How do you think Detroit would fair if Kwame was in the national limelight? Do you think in 365 days of national coverage, John Hieftje could keep from saying something that made no sense to those outside of the People’s Republic of Ann Arbor?
Which has something to do about the nature of the coverage. It’s much easier to talk to the mayor when he viists New York, than to send reporters to New Orleans to attend our neighborhood meetings, or our schools, or our hospitals, and write reports on the state of recovery.
Although there are some newspapers, that continue to have a notion of what it means to report. Roy Bragg from the San Antonio Express-News for example.
